Job Summary:
As a DevOps Engineer and a member of the CMR Scalability and Performance team, you will build innovative tools allowing scientists and students alike to discover, transform, update, and improve the quality of earth science data in the pursuit of solving a wide range of environmental and socio-economic issues. This includes leading the deployment of product updates, to identify production issues and construct scalable architecture.
As a member of the EED-3 team you will ensure adherence to operational agreements and policies (including response times), compliance to program and NASA standards and requirements (including Section 508 compliance), leveraging of industry best practices for automation and scalability of assets, and implementation of issue detection and alerts.
In this role, you will work with an amazing team of engineers on the EED-3 program that supports NASA Earth Science (ESDIS) in its mission to provide scientists and other users access to data from NASA’s Earth science missions. More specifically, you will be working with the Scalability and Performance team on the Common Metadata Repository (CMR) application. The CMR is an AWS hosted scalable repository for just over 1 billion earth science metadata records from around the world. It receives approximately 25M queries per week and is envied for its speed and reliability.
Job Responsibilities:
- Participate in all aspects of the software development lifecycle from user story generation, through design, development, automated testing and operational support.
- Develop new feature ideas to meet the ever-evolving needs of our end-users.
- Continually help the team grow by sharing new ideas and industry best practices.
- Suggest improvements to processes and tools to help the team be more efficient.
- Monitor the health and uptime of our core applications.
- Report application status to internal teams and user groups.
- Improve our architecture through the application of new cloud technologies.
Basic Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree in a technical major, such as engineering or computer science, and at least 3+ years of software development lifecycle (SDLC) experience.
- Experience with CI/CD and DevOps best practices for deploying software to cloud environments.
- 2+ years of experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS), including compute, storage, and data services such as EC2, Lambda, S3, and RDS.
- 3+ years of experience developing applications using JavaScript frameworks
- Hands-on experience using Infrastructure-as-Code development tools such as Terraform for management of cloud infrastructure and networking.
- Experience working in Lean Agile frameworks such as Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) and
Enterprise Scrum (eScrum).
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with Clojure.
- Experience with React.
- Experience with the Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana (ELK) stack.
- Experience using the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) methodology.
- Experience with the Atlassian Tool Suite (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket).
- Experience with GraphDB.

This position may work remotely. Relocation is NOT available. Quarterly travel for 2-4 days to the
Greater Washington, DC/Baltimore area is required.
