Job Overview:
The Engineering Technician IV provides advanced technical support for enterprise network infrastructure supporting NASA mission operations. This position is responsible for installing, configuring, maintaining, troubleshooting, documenting, and securing network hardware and associated infrastructure while ensuring reliable connectivity for users and mission-critical systems.
The successful candidate will work closely with network engineers, system administrators, cybersecurity personnel, and end users to maintain secure, highly available networking services across the enterprise. This role requires strong technical knowledge, analytical problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently on complex assignments while supporting critical operational environments.
Key Responsibilities:
Network Infrastructure
- Install, configure, and maintain:
- Routers
- Switches
- Firewalls
- Wireless Access Points
- Install and maintain structured network cabling.
- Verify network configurations meet organizational standards.
- Perform firmware upgrades and system patching.
- Monitor network performance and proactively identify issues.
- Troubleshoot network connectivity and performance problems.
- Maintain network equipment inventories and configuration records.
- Diagnose and resolve network outages and connectivity issues.
- Network Operations
- Execute both remote and on-site technical support.
- Collaborate with network engineering teams to resolve complex incidents.
- Analyze operational issues and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure high availability and optimal network performance.
- Cybersecurity Support
- Assist in implementing network security policies and procedures.
- Conduct security audits.
- Support implementation of cybersecurity controls.
- Monitor emerging threats and vulnerabilities.
- Recommend preventative security measures.
- Support compliance with organizational security standards.
- Documentation & Reporting
- Develop and maintain:
- Network diagrams
- Configuration documentation
- Equipment inventories
- Technical procedures
- Document changes to network infrastructure.
- Communicate network status and issues to management and technical teams.
- Customer Support
- Provide technical assistance to end users experiencing network issues.
- Train users on network best practices.
- Communicate technical concepts effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Deliver exceptional customer service while supporting mission-critical operations.
- Engineering Technician Functions
- Consistent with the Engineering Technician IV labor category, responsibilities include:
- Developing or reviewing engineering designs by extracting and analyzing engineering data.
- Preparing or recommending schematics, specifications, electrical drawings, and parts lists.
- Conducting complex tests using specialized equipment and procedures.
- Recording and analyzing engineering data and preparing technical reports.
- Supporting research and development projects by constructing prototype models and evaluating test results.
- Working independently on non-routine assignments while receiving technical guidance from engineers or supervisors.
- Providing guidance to lower-level technicians as required.

Desired Skills:
- Experience supporting NASA or other Federal Government environments.
- Familiarity with NIST cybersecurity standards and federal security requirements.
- Experience with enterprise monitoring tools.
- Knowledge of structured cabling standards.
- Experience supporting mission-critical environments.
- Relevant networking certifications (CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA/CCNP, Juniper, Fortinet, etc.).
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
- Ability to work on-site at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with multidisciplinary technical teams.
- Willingness to support occasional after-hours maintenance activities when required.
