Job Summary:
Sure Secure Solutions is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Data Publication Engineer to support an exciting project for our customer. The selected candidate will participate in publication of physical oceanographic datasets along with tools/services integration within a publicly accessible archive. Candidates should have experience in writing technical/scientific documentation and using/generating data products that follow Earth science metadata standards and common scientific data formats such as GeoTIFF, HDF, and netCDF using software tools that are common to the Earth science community.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Working within an agile, schedule-driven team to facilitate efficient, high quality data publication, following established protocols and guidelines.
- Coordinating the planning, reporting, and execution of assigned publication tasks.
- Executing data/metadata consistency and conformity to customer standards.
- Identifying and performing potential transformations/re-packaging to enhance the usage of data.
- Coordinating the assessment and execution of dataset retirement when applicable.
- Developing supplemental read software, python notebooks, binders, data recipes and approaches for efficient and high-quality analysis and verification of the integrity and scientific application of datasets ingested into the archive.
- Improving levels of service and usability of the datasets, including metadata, documentation, visualizations/animations, and facilitation/verification of tools/services integration.
- Function as a subject-matter-expert (SME) and provide scientific and technical support for a variety of physical oceanography datasets and corresponding distribution tools and services.
- Contributing to improving PO.DAAC services and infrastructure for data access and user acceptance testing as needed for various Tools and Services.
- Working within a dynamic project environment in which multiple teams are regularly engaged with shared dependencies and deliverables.
- Reporting status on all assigned tasks on a regular basis.
Required Education and Experience:
- Proficiency working in a UNIX/Linux command-line environment by scripting and executing code.
- Must have solid experience using Python language.
- Experience in drafting and publishing scientific manuscripts.
- Knowledgeable of broad areas of remote sensing (Active/Passive Microwave, Radar Altimetry/Scatterometry, GNSS-R, Optical), particularly Earth Observation data, may also include instrumentation from NOAA, ESA, EUMETSAT, JAXA, etc.
- Knowledge of the key physical oceanography data parameters commonly used in fundamental research.
- Proficiency with scientific data languages commonly used for Earth science data, including one or more of the following: Python (required), MATLAB, R, IDL.
- Experience with reading, sub setting, interpreting, and utilizing geospatially referenced and structured data for research and applications.
- Experience with scientific software tools (e.g., Jupyter Notebooks/Binders, NCO, GDAL, HDF library, ArcGIS).
- Familiarity and experience in common Earth science metadata standards (ISO19115, CMR/UMM) and conventions (Climate and Forecasting; Attribute Conventions for Dataset Discovery).
- Ability to analyze requirements and operational needs in line with the project/customer needs and constraints.
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, such as demonstrated ability to work with the Earth science community, science teams and/or project managers.
- Excellent technical writing skills and strong interpersonal skills.
- Experience with version control (i.e. GitHub) and agile development practices.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a dynamic team environment while dealing with multiple issues, tasks, and priorities concurrently.
- Demonstrated excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
- Ability to solve critical problems on-the-fly with targeted execution in decision-making.
- Willingness to present and participate in relevant information exchange discussions at science conferences and technical workshops.
- M.S or Ph.D. in physical oceanography or other related Earth science discipline with a minimum of 8 years of related experience.
